Strategy development

Our Client

An international welfare delivery charity with income of £5m.

Our Brief

In a separate piece of work, we had identified a number of organisational blockages to improving the effectiveness of a particular department. These blockages emanated from a lack of clarity on the future direction of the charity and how best to get there. A strategy development process had been initiated but had stalled and needed to be rejuvenated and re-focused.

Our Approach

Through a series of facilitated workshops with the senior management team and trustees, we helped to develop and document an agreed understanding of “Where we are now?” and “Where we want to be?”. This included a review of and revision to the organisation’s Mission and Values.

Further workshops and documentation dealt with the “How do we get there?” question. This included:

 An integrated set of key and supporting objectives.
 Operational Plans, containing tasks, timescales, responsibilities, resources required and risks.
 A method for determining priorities and resource allocation.
 A system of evaluation and reporting

Although we helped to document the agreed Strategic and Operational Plans, it was important that we were and were seen to be facilitators rather than authors of the charity’s new strategy.

Our Achievements

The iterative and consultative process resulted in a strategy that was owned by the trustees and the senior management team, a shared and improved clarity of direction and a team of people motivated to deliver.
